Glossary

  • infection: the presence of a virus in the body, or its introduction to the body.

 

  • contagious disease: transmissible diseases (can transmit from one person to another)

 

  • bacteria: one-celled organisms

 

  • transmitted: to send or forward, as to a recipient or destination

 

  • bacterial microorganism: Microorganisms or microbes are microscopic organisms that exist as unicellular, multicellular, or cell clusters.

 

  • bacillus: any rod-shaped or cylindrical bacterium of thegenus Bacillus, comprising spore-producingbacteria.

 

  • phthisis pulmonaris: an alternate name for tuberculosis

 

  • sanitation: the development and application of sanitarymeasures for the sake of cleanliness, protectinghealth, etc.

 

  • symptom: any phenomenon or circumstance accompanyingsomething and serving as evidence of it.

 

  • pleura:  'side of the body.' Today it describes the two thin membranes known as the visceral and parietal pleurae that surround the lungs.

 

  • gynaecology: deals with the health maintenance and diseases of women,especially of the reproductive organs.

 

  • antibiotics: a medicine (such as penicillin or its derivatives) that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms.

 

  • mutations: the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant.

 

  • vaccine: an antigenic substance prepared from the causative agent of a disease or a synthetic substitute, used to provide immunity against one or several diseases.

 

  • microscopic very small; tiny.
